Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State yesterday said he was worried about the persistent killings in southern Kaduna.
The governor, who spoke during the inauguration of a committee set up by the state government to find lasting solutions to the killings, regretted that so many lives have been lost in the crisis.
He expressed optimism that the committee, which is headed by the former Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Martin Lurther Agwai (rtd) will engage the communities to find solution to the problem.
El-Rufai said he was confident that Agwai and the community leaders who are members of the committee would meet at a round table and address the issues and restore peace in the area.
He assured the committee of government support to ensure its success, adding that the report of the Kaduna peace and reconciliation committee will be looked into to ensure lasting peace in the state.
“The killings in southern Kaduna are of great concern to us. We know the problems will be solved through community dialogue.
“We are humbled and privilege to have Gen. Agwai, who is not only the best military officer ever produced, but has helped in solving similar problems in some parts of the world.
“We thank you for accepting to serve on the committee, I am optimistic that you will do everything possible to ensure peace in our communities. We hope to look at the report of the peace and reconciliation committee to ensure lasting peace. We will give you all the support to accomplish the assignment,” the governor said.
Responding on behalf of other members of the committee, Gen. Agwai commended the governor for his timely action on the killings in southern Kaduna, as he assured that the committee would do its best to ensure peace in the area.
He noted: “You can replace everything in this world, but you cannot replace life. This is a very timely action by you. We will do our best and we will try our best to deliver within 30 days that has been given to the committee.”
Members of the committee are made up of the traditional rulers in the Southern part of Kaduna State, representatives of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, representatives of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) and the Kaduna State Police Commissioner amongst others.
Since 2011, there have been persistent attacks on communities in the southern part of Kaduna State by gunmen, leading to the killing of thousands of people and the destruction of property.

Am not sure why the Nigeria government cannot prevent the killing of their citizens before it happen. Where is the right to the security?
