A 45-year-old man who was said to have gone to seek spiritual assistance for an undisclosed ailment at the Hope Ministry Church, Okwanga Street, in the Egor Local Government area of Edo State, has reportedly died during the deliverance session.
The victim, identified as Mr. Osayande Ekhator, was allegedly accompanied to the church, also known as, ‘Holy Ghost Deliverance Centre’, by his aged parents for the deliverance session when the incident occurred.
Reports had it that tragedy struck when the Presiding Pastor of the church ordered some youths to tie the victim when he became violent, and in the process a bucket filled with water was poured on him after tying his two hands and the two legs, and pinning him down.
As this was going on, the deceased allegedly accidentally hit his head on the concrete floor and died instantly while his mother watched helplessly.
Seeing the blood of her son on the floor of the church, the mother was said to have raised the alarm, which attracted the attention of residents in the neighbourhood.
People then rushed into the church and demanded that the victim be taken to hospital.
When it became obvious that Mr. Ekhator Osayande had given up the ghost, he was allegedly wrapped in his clothes and kept in a car parked on the premises of the church heading to an undisclosed morgue without the consent of his family.
Father of the diseased, Mr. Arare Ekhator, who wept profusely, recalled how his late son approached him over his plans to undergo a deliverance session at the church, a request, he said, he gladly granted.
“They tied his two hands and two legs and pinned him down and when the mother asked why, they said that is what they usually do for the patients to cool down and have rest only for my wife to come out few minutes later wailing, ‘Osayande is dead’.”
Mrs. Omoregie Osas, who claimed to be a sister to late Osayande, alleged fowl play in the course of carrying out the deliverance, adding:” I believe they beat him to death, after which they said they want to take his body to mortuary and we said no”.
A senior member of the church, Mrs. Isoken Okundaye, who claimed to have also witnessed the incident, said the diseased became violent during the deliverance session and incidentally hit his head on a generating set and died.
Mrs. Okundaye said: “We have been taking care of his father even without no money. We save souls without destroying souls. We do not kill here, if they bring insanity people, we heal them,” she said.
When policemen attached to Okhoro police Division in Benin came to pick the remains of the late Osayande Ekhator, some church members began to chant holy ghost fire, a development which flared tempers of sympathisers who demanded prosecution of the alleged culprits.
Edo State Police spokesman, Stephen Onwuchei, who confirmed the incident, said the General Overseer of the church whose name was not given has been arrested and the case has been transferred to the state police command for investigation.
